Today and every Wednesday at the El Cortez Downtown hit a jackpot of $25 or more and receive a free Klondike ice cream bar which sounds like a cool deal; other specials this month at the El Cortez include daily $500 slot tournaments and $10 to $1000 in free play for every $200 or more jackpot. You must be a member of their slot club and have card in the machine but membership is free.
The "El Cortez" has been operated since 1963 by Jackie Gaughan who still maintains an apartment on the property and can often be seen on the tables. The "El Cortez" is a block from the Fremont Street Experiance on a block which used to be a bit iffy but in 2007 it was reopened as Fremont East District after some $6 million in renovations and is now home to many trendy bars. The "El Cortez" itself has nice enough casino for downtown and the hotel rooms are basic but functional. This property may not be for everyone but if you are looking for a less expensive property this hotel isn't a bad bet.
The hotel rooms are basic but reasonably priced and across the street the El Cortez owns what used to be the Odgen Hotel which they took over in 2009 and then remodeled it in to trendy suites with they call the Cabana Suites and are a good bargain for a suite. The suites have things such as 42" flat screen televisions and ipod docks as well as other amenities you would expect in a suite.
The casino is a good size and used to be cramped with machines and now its wide open with tables down the center and a pleasant place to gamble. The El Cortez is generous with comps and has low table limits and 3 to 2 blackjack which is nice.
The Cafe Cortez is the coffee shop at El Cortez and is known for good reasonably priced food and specials. The pancakes are big and fluffy and compete with Du Pars at the Golden Gate for the best in town. Service can be iffy at times usually friendly but if a local comes in the wait staff will ignore customers as they talk with them and also you have to pay at a register which isn't always manned so you have to have the server get someone to ring you up.
Basic food court that includes Seattles Best Coffee, Subway and Dryers Ice Cream.
The sports book is big for a downtown property and includes 26 flat screen televisions.
Free airport drop off shuttles at Las Vegas hotels aren't very common but the EL Cortez has one that runs 7am to 2pm Sunday through Thursday.
