51's To Move From Downtown?

Many visitors to Las Vegas may not know that Las Vegas has a minor league baseball team the 51's who just got sold and announced a plan to leave Cashman Field near Downtown and build a new stadium in Summerlin. If the team moves it means a visitor to Las Vegas is even less likely to watch a game but with the move a large plot of land near Downtown could open up for redevelopment, we will have to see what happens over the summer and fall to see if the new stadium deal happens.

Golden Nugget Gets Baccarat

The Golden Nugget Downtown is getting in to the baccarat business with a baccarat pit located just past the Rush Tower lobby and the valet entrance. Baccarat is generally a high stakes game that you would you usually think of playing at the higher end Strip resorts such as the Bellagio but the Golden Nugget is the closest property Downtown to a Strip resort. The new pit at the Golden Nugget has four tables which is enough room for 32 players with three 60 inch televisions and a seating lounge. This area was formally under used as it has had slot machines at one point and more recently they put a few tables there but this space was generally just an space as you walk through to the Rush Tower. Next to the new baccarat area is the Red Sushi restaurant which is a pretty good restaurant although only open for dinner.  The addition of the baccarat tables is interesting as it should appeal to higher end gamblers especially from Asian markets and it will be interesting to see if the Golden Nugget can draw these customers to the property that might usually stay on the Strip.

Uncle Joes Pizza To Move

Uncle Joes Pizza the hole in the wall pizza joint on East Fremont Downtown is closing and moving in to a new location inside the Gold Spike which is now without a casino and at the moment the hotel is closed. Many of us wondered how long Uncle Joes Pizza would last with revamped East Fremont area and the opening of Radio City Pizza across the street so its closing at its current location isn’t really a surprise. The revamped Gold Spike has reopened with a bar with active things to do such as darts and shuffleboard but without a casino which closed recently. The old Uncle Joes Pizza wasn’t pretty but was a good place to get a big slice of cheap cheese pizza or other inexpensive food. The new location may do better as the new owners of the Gold Spike hope to draw locals and casino workers after work to come drink and relax so a slice of cheese pizza a few footsteps away might not be a bad option.

More Dice At Hard Rock

Comedian Andrew Dice Clay who became famous in the 80’s for his raunchy humor and rhythms as well as getting banned for life from MTV is getting his residency extended with shows continuing until September; his current show at the Hard Rocks Vinyl venue was due to end but now it looks like his show will be around for a while. Andrew Dice Clay previously had a show at the Riviera on the Strip so it looks like his brand of shock humor has found a home in Las Vegas.

Cosmo Loses Money

The Cosmopolitan has announced a loss of approximately $25 million for the first quarter even after increased revenue and a high occupancy rate of around 88 percent and an huge average room rate of $273 per day. The property was never going to make back the money the hotel cost to build but its ongoing losses must be a concern yes some of its because the horrible economy but with a high rack rate for the rooms and high occupancy rate you would think the property would do better. The property is doing some things very well such as a great popular buffet, a popular hotel room product with some suites with balconies, a great club as well as some interesting bars. The main issue seems to be the casino which has seemed like an afterthought at times even though its a good size with a nice table area and all new machines. The Cosmopolitan always had a disadvantage against its big neighbors of MGM and Caesars when concerning gambling because it doesn’t have the huge players club of both programs to market to. Another disadvantage is an interesting one to have because of the huge demand for the rooms they cannot use them to comp or discount to get gamblers to stay there with their slot program. More promotion of the casino product would help this property and maybe joining with a casino company without Las Vegas properties would draw in more people to fill their casino. Often i have walked through the casino during the day with empty tables and staff standing around with the table minimums set at $25, on our upcoming trip i will check out if this is still an issue, lower limits when its slow get people to play. This is a great property with friendly staff and one of the few independents on this end of the Strip it would be great to see this property prosper.

The show features amazing huge fountains in a show set to music and has been showcased in many movies such as the remake of Ocean’s Eleven. If you want to see the show i would suggest you get there before show times as the show draws big crowds especially on Friday and Saturday nights and prime spots along the railing go quickly. Crazy Horse Too To Return

Soon To Open Crazy Horse TooWe don’t often cover too many stories about strip clubs in Las Vegas but we did have the picture above so why not. The Crazy Horse Too is located on Industrial Drive near Interstate 15 and has been closed since 2006 after the former owner plead guilty to tax charges. Right now the club is due to open May 23rd with a possible grand opening of June 1st although another club in town Crazy Horse III has already filed a complaint over the use of the Crazy Horse name so we will see what will happen. Right now the club is hiring dancers and employees for the planned opening if the club opens as planned enters a market where a lot has changed since 2006 with the economy and, increased competition.
