Before the cards are dealt there is usually an ante which all players must put up before they can bet. This helps to create a pot immediately and encourages competition.
Once the antes are in place the dealer deals the cards one at a time starting with the player on his or her left. After the initial deal there is a betting round where players can either call, raise or fold. Once the betting is complete the dealer will put three more cards on the board that everyone can use, this is called the flop. Finally the dealer will place a fifth card on the table which everyone can use for a final betting round, this is called the river.

Being the last to act gives you the advantage of knowing what your opponents are doing before it is your turn, this information can be used to make better decisions about your bluffing opportunities. Additionally, acting last gives you the opportunity to increase the value of your strong hands by forcing weaker hands out.
